Sometimes Wanna Die – Joydrop (2001)

Posted: October 5, 2012 in 2001

Canadian band fronted by lead singer Tara Slone. ‘Sometimes Wanna Die’ was from the second and last Joydrop release VIBERATE in 2001, and the video featured Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. Full-sounding rock song with crunching guitar chords and tight rhythm section. Well-arranged with laid back intro and building to crescendo and cranking mix at the end. Love how the song incorporates an 1/8 note motif throughout in different variations  — Just count “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and”  and you will easily pick up on it (the song also ends with it on its own). And how about the catchy vocal phrasing in the chorus  repeating ‘I . . . I’. These little details are key elements of songwriting that just grab me immediately and make it so much more interesting for my ears.

Joydrop is the type of band I am always so glad to have found – not a household name and did not stick around very long, or by commercial standards are not considered very successful.  But they wrote a great song, captured it with a knockout recording and left it behind to make the musical world forever a better place. That is what I define as a success and essentially what GREATSONGSNEVERDIE and ‘The List’ is all about.  A few years after discovering this song I was pleasantly surprised to see Tara Slone appearing as a contestant on the reality show ‘RockStar INXS’.
