New Jersey can proudly lay claim as the birthplace or home to many top songwriters and musicians — Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny,  Bon Jovi, and Paul Simon to name just a few. A lesser known favorite of mine is Pete Yorn. I became a fan of the singer-songwriter from Montville, NJ with his 2001 debut release musicforthemorningafter, which has been his most successful solo effort (certified Gold) and earned him one of ‘Ten Artists to Watch’ accolades from Rolling Stone Magazine.  Yorn also collaborated with actress Scarlett Johansson releasing BREAK UP in 2009 and the duo reached Platinum status in France. Yorn’s fifth studio release, the 2010 self-titled ‘black’ CD was produced by Frank Black of The Pixies. Recorded in 5 days, the result is a stripped down, straight-forward rock-n-roll record. With the more complex instrumentation that I enjoyed on his previous releases gone, a new addition to ‘The List’ immediately emerged with the opening chords of “Velcro Shoes”.  Look up ‘great rock song’ in any language and you should find this song there.
